I am all for connecting with others to increase my prospects for doing business, however I cannot emphasise how important it is to get to know someone, what they might need, who they might know what values you might share with them before pushing your product or service on them through a social networking site.
I am tired of those who ’stalk’ (sending meaningless cute messages and virtual hugs) and those who simply ‘hawk’ their wares blindly to anyone in their email database. It is not acceptable to just tell people what you are selling, at least show interest in them first, find out if they have a need for what you are offering or if they might know others who do.
This phenomenon also happens at face to face networking meetings. It is no good just emailing someone after an event to remind them of what you do for a living.
A message to the guilty – learn networking etiquette. It will serve you far better than exhausting yourself attending endless meetings and then wondering why you didn’t get any business.
